Yogena Yogo Jnatavyo
"Only through the practice of Yoga is Yoga known"
Quotation from the Vishnu Purana given by Vyasa
in his
commentary on Yoga Sutra III.6
Our approach strives to be true to the ancient model of learning where yoga was taught one-on-one and where practices were tailored to the needs of the student. Although group classes cannot provide such attention, we intentionally keep classes small (less than 12 students) so that individual needs can be met. Each session is planned with the specific group in mind. During class, the teacher is attentive to the needs and progress of each student.
Working with the breath is an integral part of the practice of asana. With each posture, students learn to coordinate movement with breath, and in each session is included a period of conscious breathing (pranayama).
Our instruction is gradual. Proper sequencing of postures insures ample preparation and counterpose. New postures and breathing techniques are introduced based on the ability of each participant. Written handouts of each class are available to reinforce learning and to help establish a strong habit of home practice.
As students progress, they learn to
link postures together in sequences (vinyasa), stay in postures, modify postures
according to their needs, and create their own practices. More sophisticated
elements of breathing are introduced and incorporated.
The aim of our
teaching is to enable students to practice independently as we know that
only
through practice and experience can the deeper benefits of yoga become
living knowledge.
